Why US Trips Deserve a Careful Travel Insurance Check

High healthcare costs can turn a holiday problem into a major financial risk

Fresh consumer attention on travel to the United States has again highlighted one of the clearest reasons Australians buy travel insurance: overseas medical costs can be severe, and the US is a destination where even a short hospital visit may become financially stressful.
For travellers planning holidays, business trips, cruises that call at US ports, or family visits, the issue is less about whether to buy cover and more about whether the policy is strong enough for the trip.

Australia’s Medicare system does not follow travellers overseas, and the United States is not covered by a reciprocal healthcare agreement that would give Australians broad public medical treatment rights. That means an accident, sudden illness, ambulance transfer, emergency surgery or extended hospital stay can leave travellers exposed unless their policy responds. A cheaper policy may still provide medical benefits, but the practical differences often sit in the limits, exclusions, emergency assistance arrangements and documentation requirements.

The reminder is especially relevant for travellers with pre-existing medical conditions, pregnancy-related considerations, recent surgery, ongoing medication, or planned activities such as skiing, hiking, cycling or theme park attractions. These circumstances do not automatically mean cover is unavailable, but they can change what must be disclosed, whether a medical assessment is required, and whether an additional premium or exclusion applies.

US-bound travellers should also think beyond medical bills alone. A serious health event can trigger extra costs for accommodation, changed flights, missed tours, a support person’s travel, or medical repatriation back to Australia. Some policies include emergency assistance teams that help co-ordinate hospitals, payment guarantees and return travel, while others may place tighter conditions on what is reimbursed and when.

Before departure, Australians should check:

  • whether overseas medical expenses are unlimited or capped;
  • how the policy treats ambulance transport, hospital admission and emergency evacuation;
  • whether existing health issues have been disclosed and accepted;
  • which activities are included, excluded or require an add-on;
  • what evidence is needed for a claim, including medical reports and receipts;
  • whether cancellation and disruption benefits match the value of the itinerary.

The broader lesson is that destination matters. A policy that looks adequate for a short regional trip may not be suitable for a country where private healthcare costs are high and payment may be expected quickly. Taking time to compare travel insurance options before booking final payments can help travellers balance price with the medical, cancellation and assistance features they are most likely to rely on if something goes wrong.
