Stronger Insurance Code Protections Are Moving Closer for Boat Owners

Clearer communication and fairer claims processes remain central for marine policyholders

Australia’s general insurance sector is moving further into implementation planning for an updated General Insurance Code of Practice, keeping claims conduct, customer communication and support for vulnerable policyholders firmly in focus.
For boat owners, this is not just a compliance issue for insurers.
It is a reminder that the value of boat insurance is often judged during the most stressful moments: after a collision, storm loss, theft, fire, grounding or marina incident.

The latest development builds on previous reporting about code reform and the push to strengthen customer protections. While marine policies can involve specialist wording, navigation limits, lay-up conditions, salvage provisions and liability questions, the broader principles still matter. Owners need timely updates, plain explanations and realistic guidance about what will happen next when a claim is lodged.

For recreational skippers, yacht owners, jet ski riders and small charter operators, the practical takeaway is to look beyond premium alone. A cheaper policy may not deliver good value if the claims pathway is unclear, exclusions are poorly understood or communication is slow when repairs, recovery costs or third-party damage are being assessed.

  • Check whether your policy clearly explains covered events, exclusions, excesses and navigation limits.
  • Keep maintenance, storage, photos, receipts and safety equipment records up to date.
  • Review whether your sum insured still reflects replacement costs for the hull, motor, trailer, electronics and accessories.
  • Ask how emergency assistance, salvage, towing and liability claims are handled before you need them.

The reforms are also a useful prompt for boat owners who rely on insurance brokers or specialist advisers. A good adviser can help translate policy wording, identify gaps between recreational and commercial use, and explain how an insurer’s claims obligations interact with the actual contract terms. That can be especially important where a vessel is used for hire, fishing tours, racing, extended cruising or moored in a higher-risk location.

Importantly, an industry code does not replace the Product Disclosure Statement, policy schedule or the duty to disclose accurate information. It should, however, raise expectations around how insurers communicate and respond. For owners reviewing cover before summer, the best approach is simple: compare the cover, not just the cost, and make sure the claims process is as understandable as the premium is affordable.
