Australia’s prudential regulator has sharpened its focus on the insurance sector, with its latest priorities pointing to a market under pressure from affordability concerns, severe weather exposure, cyber threats and operational disruption.
For households and business owners, the message is clear: insurance is no longer just a renewal task to be handled once a year.
It is becoming a core part of financial resilience.

APRA’s attention on insurer strength matters because policyholders rely on insurers being able to pay claims after large-scale events, including storms, floods, bushfires and cyber incidents. Strong capital settings, disciplined risk management and reliable reinsurance arrangements all sit behind the scenes, but they directly influence pricing, product availability and claims confidence.

The affordability issue remains particularly important. Premiums have risen sharply across many personal and commercial lines in recent years, driven by higher rebuilding costs, natural hazard losses, reinsurance pricing and inflation. While a cheaper policy can look attractive, APRA’s focus is a reminder that value should be assessed on more than the annual premium. Exclusions, excesses, sub-limits, claims service, insurer stability and whether the sum insured is realistic can all make a major difference when a loss occurs.

For businesses, the regulator’s broader emphasis on operational and technology risk is also significant. Many firms now depend heavily on digital systems, supply chains, cloud platforms and external service providers. That means cover needs may extend beyond traditional property and liability insurance to include cyber, business interruption, management liability and professional indemnity, depending on the industry and operating model.

This is a practical moment to review existing arrangements rather than waiting for renewal notices. Households should check whether home, contents, car, life and income protection policies still match their circumstances. Business owners should revisit asset values, revenue assumptions, contractual insurance requirements and exposure to customers, employees and suppliers. Where sums insured are out of date, a claim can quickly reveal a costly underinsurance gap.

The broader takeaway is not that every policyholder needs more cover. It is that decisions should be deliberate. Australians should compare insurance options, understand what is and is not covered, and consider whether excess settings are genuinely affordable in a claim. Business owners can also estimate sums insured before seeking quotes or reviewing policy limits.

Regulatory scrutiny will not remove every pressure from the market, but it should encourage stronger insurers, clearer governance and better risk discipline. For consumers, the best response is to stay informed, keep cover aligned with real risks and avoid treating insurance as a set-and-forget expense.
